Bethan has been a keen supporter of animal welfare issues and a knowledgeable, respected voice within Welsh politics from your many years as a former member of the Senedd for South West Wales.

CAWGW is delighted to have Bethan’s wealth of knowledge and passion on board it campaigns for:

• Strengthened dog breeding legislation to ensure high welfare practices
• Regulation of cat breeding to ensure kittens are bred in high welfare conditions
• Improvements to the compulsory microchipping system for dogs
• The introduction of compulsory microchipping for owned cats

Pets are an important part of the family for many people across Wales and CAWGW is working on a wide range of issues to help improve the welfare of all companion animals. In Wales the latest PDSA Pet Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report shows that 26% of the Welsh population has a cat, and 30% has a dog. There are believed to be an estimated 700,000 owned cats and 600,000 owned dogs in Wales.

CAWGW’s members are leading animal welfare charities and are supported by associate members who together deliver invaluable services for companion animals in Wales. The group has a shared interest and significant combined expertise around companion animals, pooling its knowledge and resources as a sector group in Wales to focus solely on improving the welfare of companion animals.

 

Reflecting on her new role Bethan said:

“I am excited to be working as Chair of CAWGW as it campaigns to improve the lives of companion animals in Wales. Since I adopted a rabbit as a child I’ve cared passionately about animal welfare and know the comfort, support and love companion animals provide.

Whilst much has been achieved, I know that there is still more to do to bring companion animal welfare standards up to where they should be in Wales.

I will be working with the charities and organisations which make-up CAWGW to provide solutions and campaign for change.”
